Glycolic Acid

What the evidence says

Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid that loosens cohesion between surface skin cells. A double-blind trial of a daily 5% cream found better texture and discoloration than vehicle after three months, but wrinkle improvement did not reach statistical significance.[1]

A 2025 network meta-analysis of randomized photoaging trials found glycolic acid improved roughness, while results differed across endpoints and it carried more adverse reactions than tretinoin in the available comparisons. Chemical-peel reviews for melasma also report possible benefit, but protocols and evidence quality are heterogeneous.[2][3]

A low-strength leave-on cosmetic is not equivalent to a 20% to 70% professional peel. Concentration, pH, contact time, neutralization, skin type, and concurrent retinoids all change both effect and risk; strong peels can cause burns and post-inflammatory pigment changes, particularly in darker skin.[3][4]

FDA guidance warns that alpha-hydroxy acids can increase ultraviolet sensitivity during use and for up to a week after stopping. Daily sun protection and gradual introduction matter, and persistent burning, blistering, or darkening is a reason to stop rather than push through.[5]
