What the evidence says

Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. SPF primarily describes UVB protection, while broad-spectrum testing adds UVA coverage. FDA and WHO guidance place sunscreen alongside shade, clothing, hats, and behavior rather than treating it as complete protection.[2][6]

The strongest direct photoaging evidence comes from a randomized Australian trial. After four and a half years, participants assigned to daily sunscreen showed 24% less progression in measured skin aging than those told to use sunscreen at their discretion.[1]

The same randomized Nambour program also tested skin-cancer outcomes. During the original trial, daily use reduced squamous-cell carcinoma tumor burden but not basal-cell carcinoma; follow-up found the squamous-cell benefit persisted, while basal-cell results remained unclear.[3][4]

A later melanoma follow-up observed fewer melanomas in the daily-use group, especially invasive melanoma, but the overall result was borderline and melanoma was a secondary outcome. This supports regular use while preserving uncertainty about the exact magnitude of melanoma prevention.[5]

These trials support prevention rather than reversal. Real-world protection depends on adequate application, broad-spectrum coverage, and reapplication; sunscreen should not be used to prolong exposure to intense sun.[1][2][6]
