What the evidence says

Oral collagen trials commonly measure hydration, elasticity, and wrinkle depth over a few months. Meta-analyses published in 2021 and 2023 pooled mostly small trials and reported favorable average changes in hydration and elasticity, but both noted heterogeneity and limitations in the underlying studies.[3][4]

A 2025 meta-analysis reached a more skeptical conclusion: benefits were absent in studies without pharmaceutical-company funding and in high-quality studies, while positive estimates were concentrated in industry-funded or lower-quality trials.[1]

A 2026 systematic review found apparent improvement in many individual trials but rated most included randomized trials at high risk of bias. This pattern supports an Emerging rating rather than treating pooled statistical significance as firm proof.[2]

Product-specific results are not interchangeable. In one 12-week randomized trial in 99 women, collagen peptides improved skin water measures but did not improve elasticity or skin thickness; the investigators were employees of the product manufacturer.[5]

Products differ in source, peptide composition, dose, and co-ingredients. The evidence therefore supports, at most, a possible modest short-term cosmetic effect—not a claim that oral collagen rebuilds connective tissue generally or slows biological aging.[1][2][4]
