What the evidence says

DASH emphasizes vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, nuts, fish or poultry, and low-fat dairy while limiting sodium, sweets, and saturated fat. It is an eating pattern rather than a branded menu, allowing culturally appropriate foods and different energy needs.[6]

The original controlled-feeding trial found that the combination DASH diet lowered blood pressure within eight weeks, with larger reductions in participants who had hypertension. Because meals were supplied, the study demonstrates biological efficacy more clearly than ordinary long-term adherence.[1]

DASH-Sodium showed independent and additive effects of the DASH pattern and lower sodium intake, with the largest blood-pressure reduction at the lowest sodium level. A later meta-analysis of randomized trials confirms reductions in systolic and diastolic pressure across varied populations.[2][3]

Umbrella evidence associates DASH adherence with better cardiometabolic outcomes, but much of the disease-outcome literature is observational. A Cochrane review found limited randomized evidence for hard cardiovascular outcomes, so blood-pressure efficacy should not be inflated into a trial-proven longevity claim.[4][5]
