Caffeine + L-Theanine

What the evidence says

Caffeine increases alertness, while L-theanine may alter the subjective and cognitive profile of stimulation. Small crossover trials found improvements in selected reaction-time, vigilance, or task-switching measures with the combination, but they used different dose ratios and did not improve every outcome.[1][4]

A 2025 systematic review included 50 randomized trials of tea, theanine, or theanine plus caffeine; 15 contributed to meta-analyses. The combination produced small-to-moderate advantages on some reaction-time, vigilance, attention-switching, and mood outcomes, but confidence intervals often showed substantial uncertainty.[2]

Not every controlled study finds added benefit. A lower-dose crossover trial found that combining theanine with caffeine eliminated the measured behavioral effects of caffeine rather than improving them, illustrating the uncertainty around dose, ratio, and context.[5]

The evidence supports a possible acute attention aid more than a general nootropic or brain-health intervention. Studies usually test one dose over hours, so they do not establish repeated-use benefits for learning or work performance. Safety limits are driven mainly by caffeine; EFSA notes that even 100 mg near bedtime can affect sleep in some adults.[1][2][6][3]

Side effects and cautions

  • Caffeine can cause insomnia, anxiety, jitters, nausea, headache, palpitations, or increased blood pressure, with wide individual variation.[3]
  • The FDA cites 400 mg per day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects for most adults, but pregnancy, medications, health conditions, and sensitivity can lower an appropriate limit.[3]
